My mother took Sassy and my niece and nephew to the movie place to get me something to watch. Of course, they had to pick out some "appropriate" movies for the kids to watch. Granny also sprang for some movie candy. She figured since I can't go to the movies, she'd bring the experience home.
So, tonight, we sat and watched Flicka. My Sassy is crazy about horses and this one was her pick. It was a tear jerker, but ultimately a sweet little movie. Let me tell you, Tim McGraw is one hot daddy ... not much of an actor, but damn hot. It is exactly what you think it is, horse crazy teenage girl bucking the path that her parents want to send her down. Good ultimately triumphs, but only after much rejection of the parents' instruction, brother stepping up and becoming a man, and a near death experience of both equine and human varieties. We all sat wiping tears away at the ending, while Stella (my niece) adamantly denied that she was crying. Sassy decided that maybe if she watched it again tomorrow, it wouldn't be quite so sad.
We also watched Little Miss Sunshine. Let me say, not quite appropriate for the under 18 set, but they watched it anyway. By the time we figured out it wasn't good for them it was too late and they were too into the movie to send them out. It totally lived up to the billing. Ultimately a sweet movie, but very bizarre. From what I'd heard about it, I expected a send up of beauty pageants, which it was. The real story is the incredibly disfunctional family and the trip they take to get the daughter to a pageant. I kept saying, "God, they all hate each other so much!!" My mother looked at me every time and nodded her head. Alan Arkin totally deserved his Oscar. Anyone who can say fuck that many times AND snort heroin wins every time.
What's up tomorrow? The Departed and The Prestige. Painkillers and good movies, what an exciting life I lead.
